About the Artist

ARTIST STATEMENT

My favourite piece of art is usually the one I’m working on and I enjoy the process from start to finish. The ability to be able to turn marks on a paper or canvas into a picture is truly a magical gift. I work from photographs for technical reference, creating and breathing life into each portrait with the goal of bringing the very soul of a subject into each piece.

Realism is by far my most preferred style. Photographers have a real talent for capturing the perfect moment in their work and my goal is to take those images of “what is” and create a piece of art that captures the technical aspect of the photo and enhances it with emotion and beauty. If I can make a picture so vivid and realistic that the viewer can lose themselves in it, my job is done.

I grew up without a lot of extras. My art was always my go-to activity and was always encouraged. My only formal art training was attained at South Grenville District High School. I graduated in 1982 and I achieved an award for Art. Being self taught is admittedly a slower means to an end, it has been a journey worth taking, with many delights along the way. The discovery of new methods and materials and tools, new concepts and processes, has caused my art to evolve in ways I would have never imagined.

I currently live on a farm in the Ottawa Valley, outside of the small town of Perth, Ontario, in Canada where I enjoy my family, gardening and other domestic pursuits. My surroundings provide me with endless opportunities to draw and paint various subjects and to interact with my environment in a way that is both sustainable and eco friendly.
